SOCIAL TELEVISION: BETWEEN SOCIAL NETWORKS AND TV

Are you one of those who tweets while enjoying your favorite TV show on Pinoy Tambayan ? You are not alone: 9 out of 10 Twitter users watch TV while using another device . This phenomenon is known as multitasking and the device you use is called a second screen. And all together is what is called Social Television.

WHAT IS SOCIAL TELEVISION?

We know as Social Television the tendency to combine the use of apps and social networks with television. That allows us to discuss with our friends the chapter of the fashion series, the successful reality show or the football game in real time.:

"Social television I think it comes to be what people used to do at the bar: they commented on what they had seen on TV last night, only now instead of waiting for the next day they do it in real time and with much more people".

The study conducted by TVGuide shows that 95% of fans who participate in social networks do so after watching an episode on TV , while 53% do so before and 40% during the broadcast . A recent study by Trendrr.TV showed that during the broadcast of public TV programs, Twitter is made with 85% of the comments .

To understand a little better the importance of this phenomenon of social television, 40% of those surveyed by IPSOS Connect say they have watched a certain program because people were talking about it on social networks.

SOME EXAMPLES

Canal Trece (Argentina) aired, in 2014, Guapas . And it turned out to be an example on how to lead your audience to multitasking .

The soap opera tells the story of five girls who seek to recover from a significant economic loss. The protagonists published messages in the series that appeared simultaneously on Twitter. In one episode Laura's character posted a selfie in the middle of a party at a Karaoke.

The series was able to understand the trend of social television and extended the use of Twitter profiles of the soap opera's protagonists to encourage viewers to watch the next episode throughout the week.

On the other hand, in TVE, something similar is being lived with the series The Ministry of Time .

The series tells the experiences of a Ministry in charge of detecting and preventing any intruder from the past from reaching our present (or vice versa) in order to change history for their benefit.

The series has been trending topic of Twitter in each broadcast and has achieved the dream of every Community Manager: that the fans contribute the content Pinoy Channel.

The ministéricos (as the fans of the series call themselves) have made characters such as Velázquez, Rosendo or Lope de Vega a trend in social networks. The ministéricos themselves have contributed a large amount of graphic material on the network. For its part, the team responsible for the social networks of The Ministry of Time , responded by publishing an app with which users could create their own identification as a member of the Ministry and improved the web space dedicated to this series.

Also on TVE, the presenter Sergio Martín uses his own Periscope channel to interact with the audience of the program and collect questions to ask his interviewees during the advertising breaks.

The SuperBowl is one of the sporting events of the year, and this is confirmed by social networks. In the 2016 edition there were a total of 111.9 million viewers in the United States. Next, an image with the data obtained from the conversation on Twitter.

THE SOCIAL TELEVISION.

Movistar presented at the Mobile World Congress 2016 a pioneering initiative that represents a step forward in the interaction of users with television content. The telecommunications company will integrate the social component and interactivity into its television so that users can comment, discuss with any viewer or talk to their contacts directly from the Pinoy TV while watching any live program or event. In this way it is hoped to integrate, even more, the TV into the Internet of Things.

There is no doubt that the way in which we consume television has changed. And it is that new technologies allow us to share our opinion in real time about what we see on the small screen. And the media, meanwhile, are increasingly aware of it.

Do you also multitasking ? Can you tell us about your experience with the “second screen”? Do you know any television program or series that is an example of social television? Tell us!
